You may be able to ask for refugee protection in Canada if you can prove that returning to your home country will put your life in danger. You can make an application for asylum or refugee protection claim at any port of entry in Canada. Once you have submitted your application for the Canadian refugee protection, you can legally work in Canada after receiving your your work permit. This work permit is free and can also be renewed for free if you are still waiting for your hearing.

In-country Asylum Claims
If you have entered Canada without claiming your asylum at one of its port of entry, you can still submit your asylum claim by creating a portal account on the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and then submit your asylum claim online. The IRB will evaluate your application through a hearing to decide if you qualify for refugee protection in Canada. All hearings take place virtual apart from urgent and more sensitive cases, which can be heard in-person.
Please note that Canadian government has the right to cancel or remove someone's refugee status if it believes that the person accepted the protection of their home country after obtaining refugee status in Canada. This could happen if a person travels to their home country after the refugee status has been granted by the Canadian Government.
